Jan. 13, 2023, COMMERCE CITY, Colo – The Colorado State Board of Education (SBOE) voted 5-3 Thursday to deny an appeal from Be the Change Community School seeking to open a new charter high school in the district. The Adams County School District 14 (Adams 14) Board of Education denied the application in November due to a number of concerns involving a lack of a fully developed curriculum, a governing board that would be composed of individuals outside the Commerce City community, and the financial viability of the charter school.

“The SBOE’s denial of Be The Change Community School’s appeal supports the enormous concerns the Adams 14 Board of Education had involving the application. The Adams 14 Board of Education takes its responsibility seriously to ensure that our community and students are well served by any entity offering education services within the district,” stated Adams 14 Chief Legal Counsel Joe Salazar. “We are particularly pleased that the state board’s vote also was a tacit rejection of Colorado State Board of Education Member Steve Durham’s unprofessional comments about the district prior to the vote,” said Salazar.

As a Colorado public school district, Adams 14 has the constitutional right to local control. That right extends to reviewing, approving, or denying charter school applications based on a variety of factors to ensure that the best interest of students is met. As affirmed by the SBOE, the Adams 14 board’s decision to deny Be The Change Community School’s application was in the best interest of Adams 14 students.
